mr.bootstraps here: as a kid, taking those trips to Gatlinburg and the Smokies played a direct part in making me into a southern travel photographer. We’d roll out from Nashville to that awesome town surrounded by big hills, we would create special memories, we would leave, and I would always be craving the next adventure.
Gatlinburg today is moving in an awesome direction with new attractions like anakeesta, gatlinburgskylift and the tennesseecidercompany. Aside from the delicious cider (until the appropriate age) I’m looking forward to bringing my kids here and forging their own amazing memories. (You’ll have the elevated southern dinner of your life at thegreenbriertn by the way. )

Chattanooga Whiskey 99 Rye is a rye whiskey made from a mash bill of Malted Rye, Yellow Corn, Caramel Malted Rye, and Chocolate Malted Rye. It is aged in 53-gallon barrels and is bottled unfiltered. According to Chattanooga’s own write-up, this Straight Rye Malt Whiskey contains more than 60% malted rye!

Color: a deep golden amber
Style: Straight Rye Malt Whiskey

Nose: a wonderful brown sugar, chocolate, and rich caramel. Rich molasses and a myriad of dry fruits, including dried grapes, dried apricots, and figs.
Palate: that sweet molasses and brown sugar immediately join the party. A hint of vanilla, followed by some orange citrus and black pepper. Lastly, I get this wonderful chocolate note making this rye’s flavor profile rich and delicious.
Finish: medium to long on this 99-proof pour. The mouth lingers with a nice array of rye-spice. Finally, I finish up with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cocoa.
Conclusion: Chattanooga Whiskey always brings something different to the table, but that is said with the utmost respect. Their unique mash bill blends prove that craft distilleries are continually pushing the boundaries of greatness and deliciousness, and this Chattanooga Whiskey 99 Rye is no exception. Chattanooga Whiskey’s Bottled in Bond: Fall 2020 Vintage. This unique expression features whiskey barreled between July and December 2020. The Fall 2020 blend highlights the rich flavors typical of the fall and winter seasons. This is a 5-grain recipe that combines two types of drum-roasted caramel malted barley, enhancing the blend’s chocolate and toffee notes. The Fall 2020 release is crafted in four batches of 10 barrels each.

Color: Rich copper.
Nose: buttery sweet with vanilla, caramel, and butterscotch. Think Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream pie.
Palate: starts sweet with butter, toffee, oak, and that oatmeal cream pie. Next, a transition into black tea and bitter chocolate.
Finish: the uniqueness of finishing on the palate with black tea and bitter chocolate, it then comes full circle once again with the buttery sweetness of oatmeal cream pie.
Conclusion: The flavor profile has this rollercoaster beginning with one profile changing into another and then coming back full circle in a harmonious, enjoyable return.
This expression has all the rich complex notes that make you want to start the fireplace on those cooler evenings and maybe even decorate the house for the holidays. Either way, this is an extremely enjoyable pour and one you want on your shelf. Well done, chattwhiskey

Home is where the Honeybear is... I’m hard pressed to think of another place I’ll stay on my trips out to the mountains. The littlearrowresort is literally a football field’s length from the greatsmokynps entrance in Townsend and their new canvas tent lodgings are pretty much perfect to settle down a bit after a day of shooting in the park. I was privileged to meet the owners as well and they’re so incredibly kind - such an awesome representation of the folks you’ll meet out here in Appalachia.
